# Why AI portraits don't look like you, and how to choose a better selfie

> AI portrait apps sometimes return a face that is not quite yours. What causes it, how to pick and prepare a source photo, and what to do when a result still looks wrong.

AI portraits stop looking like you when the model has too little clear information about your face, or when the style pushes it to change features. The fix is mostly in the source photo: one well-lit, sharp, unfiltered face looking at the camera gives any AI portrait app much more to work with. When a result still looks wrong, change one thing at a time, the photo first, then the style.

## Why it happens

AI portrait tools do not copy your face pixel by pixel. They generate a new image that matches the style, guided by what they can read from your photo. When that signal is weak, the model fills the gaps with something typical. Common complaints in reviews of popular apps include results that look over-processed, over-brightened or slightly uncanny ([TheAppWhisperer](https://theappwhisperer.com/2026/05/best-ai-headshot-portrait-apps-for-iphone-android-in-2026/), [Unstar](https://unstar.app/blog/is-remini-legit-safe-photo-enhancer-app-reviews-2026)).

The usual causes:

1. **Low light or harsh shadows** hide the shape of your face.
2. **Strong filters or beauty mode** already changed your features before the AI saw them.
3. **Angles** such as a low phone angle or a three-quarter turn distort proportions.
4. **Small faces** in a wide shot leave too few pixels to read.
5. **Things in the way**: sunglasses, hair across the eyes, a hand, a mask.
6. **A style far from your photo**: a full-body figurine from a close-up selfie forces the model to invent the rest.

## How to take a good source selfie

1. **Face a window.** Soft daylight from the front is the most reliable light you have.
2. **Hold the phone at eye level**, arm's length or further, and look into the lens.
3. **Use the back camera if someone can help.** It is usually sharper than the front camera.
4. **Turn off beauty filters and portrait effects.** Start from a plain, original photo.
5. **Fill the frame** with your head and shoulders for portrait styles; take a separate full-body shot for full-body styles.
6. **Keep the background simple.** Busy backgrounds can bleed into the result.
7. **Take several** and pick the sharpest, with a neutral or natural expression.

You do not need any app for this part; it is the same advice a photographer would give.

## When a result still looks wrong

Change one variable at a time so you learn what helps:

- **Try a different source photo first.** This fixes most problems.
- **Then try a different style.** Some styles change faces more than others.
- **Compare a few results** before deciding, since AI output varies from run to run.

In [Anamur](/app/anamur) you choose a style template, upload your photo and get a new image. If a result does not look like you, the app's own advice is to try another photo or template. You can browse similar templates to find a style that keeps your features better, save the ones that work as favourites, and find earlier results in your gallery. Each generation uses credits, so testing two or three good photos is usually cheaper than many runs with a poor one.

## Before you post

- **Review every image at full size.** Check eyes, teeth, ears and hands.
- **Be honest about AI use** where a platform or employer expects it, for example on a professional profile.
- **Think about privacy.** AI portrait apps process photos on servers. Anamur sends photos to its AI provider only after you consent; read each app's privacy terms before uploading.
- **Do not upload other people's faces**, especially children's, without permission.

## Quick checklist

| Do | Avoid |
| --- | --- |
| Soft front light | Overhead or back light |
| Eye-level, looking at the lens | Low angles, heavy turns |
| Plain original photo | Filters, beauty mode |
| Face filling the frame | Tiny face in a wide shot |
| Simple background | Sunglasses, hair over eyes |
